SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol that is used to connect to a server and execute different tasks through a command line. The protocol is popular with many experienced users, as the data transmitted over it is encrypted, so it may not be intercepted on the way by a 3rd party. SSH access may be employed for a number of things with regards to the type of hosting account. With a shared hosting account, in particular, SSH is one of several ways to import/export a database or to upload a file if the server allows for it. When you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH can be used for virtually everything - you can install software or restart particular services like the web server or the database server which run on the machine. SSH is employed mostly with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients which permit you to use the protocol if your laptop or computer is using a different OS as well. The connection is created on TCP port 22 by default and the remote hosting server always listens for incoming connections on that port although a lot of providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Shared Hosting

SSH access is featured with all Linux shared packages that we provide. With some of them, it is included as standard, while with others it is an additional upgrade which you can include with several clicks from your website hosting Control Panel. You can obtain SSH access through the section dedicated to it in which you will also find the information you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You will be able to pick the password which you will use and, if necessary, you shall be able to modify it with a few mouse clicks from the same location. All the commands which may be used with our shared packages are listed inside a help article along with relevant instances. If the SSH access function is permitted for your account, you'll also be able to upload files through your favorite FTP client via an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

If you have a semi-dedicated server account with us, you will be able to receive SSH access to it with just a mouse click from the corresponding section of the Hepsia hosting Control Panel, supplied with all accounts. If your package does not support this function by default, you will be able to include it without difficulty through the Upgrades menu. After you go to the SSH section, you'll find the details which you need to connect to the server through a command line or a desktop app - the server/host, the port number, the username and the password. The latter can be updated anytime, if required. These login credentials are also needed if you would like to upload files via a secure connection and you would like to use SFTP, which is also part of the SSH access service which we offer. A detailed list of the commands which you can execute will offer you a better idea of what tasks you can perform inside your account and each is accompanied by several instances of the syntax.

Because the VPS is a software emulation of a dedicated server and is separated from the other accounts inside the physical machine, there won't be any restrictions regarding the commands that you can use. You will have full root access, so that you could set up and run any application which can work on a Linux server, manage files, folders and databases or start/stop/reboot the whole machine or any software running on it.
