Introduced in 2001, the .NAME domain name extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to book john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken 3rd-level domains remained working.
